Precautions to be taken during the celebration of Deepavali

PRESS NOTE

To ensure an accident free Deepavali festival-2008, Karnataka State Fire & Emergency Services department has taken the following measures:

· On 30-09-2008, all the department officers have been instructed not to give NOC for storage and sale of crackers in congested and thickly populated areas and give NOC for storage and sale only in the open grounds, selected by the jurisdictional licencing authorities (Commissioners of Police and District Magistrates).

· Further, all Fire vehicles are kept in readiness and the staff are instructed not to avail leave/weekly off and be available to respond to any emergencies.

The members of general public are requested to observe following safety measures during the celebration of Deepavali, specially while handling the fire works.

a) Allow the children to light fire works only when there is an adult around.
b) Do not light fire works inside the house but light them in an open space away from combustible materials.
c) Never wear loose, flowing clothes while lighting fire works.
d) Hold sparklers away from the body.
e) Never bend over the fire works while lighting them. Light them from the side.
f) Never light fire works under confinement in a metal container.
g) Never put fire works in the pocket.
h) Never store fire works or unpack them near a flame or heat source.
i) Never return to fire work once lit-it may explode in your face.
j) Never light a flowerpot holding it.
k) Aviod lighting of rockets.
l) Never take unnecessary risk while lighting fire works just to show off to your friends.
m) Keep a bucket of water handy while lighting fire works and in case of any burn injury, immediately pour clean water.
n) Get all your friends together and pool in your fire works. Light them in an open space. Have some adult supervise the display. This way you will be able to enjoy many more types of fire works and it will also be safer and cheaper.
o) Show concern for infants, the aged, sick & animals. Do not light loud fire works near them or near Hospitals.
